50 Most Famous Cartoon Characters & Mascots

Could you name fifty famous cartoon characters off the top of your head? I didn’t think I could … until I got started. I’d wager if you are over 30 years old, you would recognize and know every single one of these characters. For real, every single one. In writing this post I came to realize the sheer volume of cartoon characters that have permanently infiltrated my brain. A famous cartoon character or mascot design seems to have one thing in common: they are incredibly sticky. Like it or not, they invade your head space, and never leave.

If you are like me, some of these characters you grew up with as a kid, others you will have gotten to know and love as an adult. The one’s that made it on this list did so because of their enduring greatness to last beyond mere fad and pull up a permanent place both in popular culture and in our minds. In no particular order, let’s get this started! And naturally, all characters are copyright of their respective owners. Don’t steal them m’kay?

  1. Aye, what a great collection! Did ye not git permission to portray The Brothers Rice (as they are officially called) or was it simply a fact of not finding them because their name is spelled with a “K” instead of a “C”: Rice Krispies, of course! Now, why didn’t Alfred E Neuman make the cut? He doesn’t do any *less* than Hello Kitty or a number of others who did make the grade! Also, any list of cartoon characters is remiss without Marvin the Martian. And what about the Keep On Truckin’ guys? They don’t have names, but everybody’s seen them, to be sure! From the same artist we have Mr Natural and Fkakey Foont, Fritz the Cat, and Devil Girl. (You’ll have to read the story about the creation of the latter yourselves,. as I don’t know y’all and it is racy.)

I agree w/ those of you who say Woody Woodpecker should be there. He’s one of my favorite cartoon characters, though I don’t care much for the original Woody. That Woody’s pretty annoying! By the way why isn’t Woody Woodpecker as popular as Bugs Bunny! I understand people like Bugs so much because he’s so smart & Woody’s very smart too!

  8. Hey evryone!!!

  12. Your Comments It’s weird but this morning I found on google a list of smartest cartoon characters & Woody Woodpecker wasn’t on it! Why would that be? He’s definitely one of the smartest! Wile Coyote on the other hand was on the list & shouldn’t have been. He’s not very smart at all!

  18. Calvin and Hobbes first love for sure, Jughead a close second. I love that Jughead rarely ever has his eyes open. Creative genius, I think.

  22. How could you not include SpongeBob?!
Other than that major omission, the list was great 🙂 Especially love Calvin and Hobbes and the pic you have is adorable 😀

  23. You forgot Stewie, SpongeBob, Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, Peter, Patrick, Phineas, Ferb, Perry, and thats all you forgot.

  24. I am only 14 and I recognized all but one of those characters. I am amazed at how many cartoon characters I knew, it all comes down to having a grandpa and a dad who were (and still are) addicted to cartoons. And my dad being an artist, has a book of cartoon characters that you can be thought how to draw. I love cartoons and will continue loving them.
